This Bible Study will give you an explanation about the meaning of the Word in Matthew 5:14-16, where Jesus tells his disciples that they are “the light of the world”.
You are the Light of the World – Matthew 5:14-16
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16).
You are the Light of the World – Reflection
First of all we have to say that in speaking of the “Light” in the Bible it is synonymous with Jesus Christ, because He is the only source of light and only with Christ in our lives can we be Light.
Therefore, the Lord Jesus, after speaking to his disciples, spoke about the true qualities of a servant of God through the Beatitudes (Mt 5:3-12), told them: “You are the light of the world”.
Simply put, the Lord Jesus meant that if they were humble in seeking God (Mt 5:3), they had sincerely repented of your sins (Mt 5:4), you were meek (Mt 5:5), hungry and thirst for the knowledge of God (Mt 5:6), they practice mercy (Mt 5:7), they had cleansed their heart of evil (Mt 5:7), they were peacemakers (Mt 5:8) and if they were also willing to suffer persecutions and reproach because of faith in his name, then they were Light to this world.
He also told them, “A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (Mt 5:14). In this way, he wanted to teach that they could not silence the truth of the Gospel to the world and that they had to make a difference through their testimony of life to an evil and perverse generation (Phil 2:15).
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light (Ephesians 5:8).
We as servants of Christ have to show the light that is in our lives through our behavior. But also, we must denounce sin and the works of darkness (Eph 5:11), in the same way that the Prophet John the Baptist denounced sin in his time, He was the light that shone in the middle of his generation.
He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light (John 5:35).
On the other hand, The Lord Jesus told them, “Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house” (Mt 5:15). Teaching in this way, the main function of light, which is to illuminate every place that is in darkness. Because it would be illogical to turn on a light to cover it with a box. In this way, we cannot hide the light that is in us by silencing the truth, doing what the world does, letting sin tarnish our light or not looking at the needs of others.
The Lord Jesus also tells us “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Mt 5:16). For this reason, the Bible says that “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Eph 2:10).
In conclusion, only by having an encounter with Jesus Christ and allowing Him to change our lives, can man be true Light to others. Because you cannot be Light being in idolatry, fornication, adultery, immorality or any type of sins that the world walks, Because God is Light and there is no darkness in Him.
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin (1 John 1:5-7).
